Safe Way To Get BirdNET
How can computers learn to recognize birds from sounds? The BirdNET research project uses artificial intelligence and neural networks to train computers to identify more than 3,000 of the most common species worldwide. You can record a file using the microphone of your Android device and see if BirdNET correctly identifies the probable bird species present in your recording. Get to know the birds around you and help us to collect observations by submitting your recordings.

It immediately starts recording when you open the app which is nice when you don't want to miss the sound you're currently hearing. It would be nice if you could scroll back farther to previously recorded sound. There are times when I've tried recording a sound & I'll get some of the sound when it first opens but the bird stops right after recording starts so I wait & it doesn't make the sound again then I waited too long to get back to the start of the recording to select it to be analyzed.

This app has been a game changer for me, a novice birder who often goes out by myself. Many thanks for developing this for Android! Update (2026) - After having this on my phone for 5 years, I now use Merlin more because of its real-time ID capability, even when offline. However, BirdNet can sometimes ID a bird that Merlin doesn't recognize. Also in BirdNet, you highlight a defined part of the recording with just the calls you want, often eliminating the need to use other editing software.

Great app for identifying birds, but there is one really annoying bug preventing it from being 5 stars. When selecting a range of the spectrum to play back or analyze, the audio doesn't line up, it's shifted a second or two after the selection and gets worse the further it is to the left. It usually takes multiple tries to get an accurate selection. This wasn't a problem a few years ago, though it could be because I had a different phone (Moto X4). Would also love the app to be open source.
